Video Surveillance installation – DIY or professional installation?

Once you have decided to secure your home with security cameras, the next thing which hits your mind is installation procedure and equipment details. If you do a bit of research on the web, you can easily get some knowledge on what equipment is suitable for you and what fits into your budget needs. Whether it is the installation of a Nanny cam or a bunch of analog cameras, the manufacturer which offers this equipment is nowadays offering user installation guide in a precise way, which can be decoded by anyone and everyone.

But if the CCTV installation is in a farm house, a palatial building, a multi-store deck or in the woods, then the user needs to think twice. They are many instances where the end users do the installation on their own, but in the end are dissatisfied by the results. The disappointment can be influenced by factors such as selection of equipment, the investment made or in the installation.

As per a survey conducted by a well known Security Camera company, the success rate in DIY security camera installation is just 45% and the rest are/will face bitter consequences. If the camera count is less than 4-5, then the user looses nothing much in this procedure. But imagine, if he/she decides to secure their farm house or a palatial building with more than 10 cameras, then things can change a lot.

In a survey commissioned by Security Industry Association, in US alone the loss incurred by improper installations of security surveillance equipment is estimated to be around $13 million every year. Many go for DIY jobs in order to save the bucks paid to the installer. Instead in most cases, this deed of them pushes them into more troubles.

Now, for all those who are in two minds on this issue, here are some pros and cons involved in DIY installation and professional installations:

Do it yourself (DIY) installation advantages

  • Less expensive- As expected this type on installation will save money. Since, you do not need to pay the labor costs or other expenses to the installers; you can save these expenses on DIY installations.
  • Full system control- You know the ins and outs of the system when you install it on your own and so this helps you in taking full system control of the installation and makes it easier for you when an issue arises.

DIY Installation disadvantages

  • Generally, in DIY installations, the room for error maximizes. Lack of training and experience can push you in more trouble.
  • As the installation is new and the scope for error is high, you tend to invest a lot of your valuable time in this installation. That means, on seeing a Youtube video you can just have the vague idea on how the installation procedure will be. But on a practical note things will change as they are a lot of hiccups involved.
  • DIY security installations will usually look less professional and the end result will surely be disappointing in most cases.
  • In some cases, professional installers will need to spend more time to undo your installation and rearrange it. And the more time they spend the expense will increase.

Professional installations advantages

  • Satisfaction is guaranteed as job is done right the first time around.
  • It saves your time a lot and you can invest the same amount of time in your other daily activities.
  • Warranty is assured and assistance will be available just a call away.

Professional installation disadvantages

  • As usual and expected, the labor for installation and programming along with high end hardware will make the professional installation costlier.

So, keep these things in mind and decide for yourself.
