Toshiba announces 5TB hard disk exclusively for video surveillance applications

Toshiba’s storage products business unit has announced the company’s first 3.5 inches 5TB hard drive sample release into the market. The company is currently releasing a limited number of hard drives into the market and will present them commercially to the storage industry in coming months.

Toshiba MD04ABA-V 5TB HDD is a low RPM hard drive which is being released for video surveillance application needs. The MD04ABA-V 5TB hard drive series is designed to be used in surveillance digital video recorders, network video recorders and Hybrid surveillance video recorders.

“The latest generation surveillance cameras produce higher resolution video streams that increase storage capacity requirements. Toshiba MD04ABA-V Series Surveillance HDDs deliver greater capacity, quieter and more power efficient operations”, said Scott Wright, product marketing manager at Toshiba Storage Products Business Unit.

Toshiba MD04ABA-V series of hard drives are designed for surveillance applications with support for up to 32 HD cameras and can sustain 24/7 surveillance operations. These drives are enriched with features such as rotational vibration sensors, which make them suitable for use in RAID/multi HDD based surveillance platforms.

Therefore, with the availability of these drives, video surveillance related product manufactures can devise small sized storage appliances which can store massive amounts of data–such as NVRs and Video Management System. From customer’s point of view, they will have the flexibility to retain higher resolution video surveillance data for longer periods using fewer HDDs and thus accounting to lower energy costs.

The price and availability of Toshiba MD04ABA-V series 5TB hard drives will be updated shortly.
