Medical Doctor Associates (MDA), a national medical staffing company, was a fast growing business that soon found that their aging fiber channel appliance simply did not cut their ever growing IT environment.
Lacking the ability to network their off-site servers and storage, MDA’s was struggling with a difficult and overall limited backup infrastructure. With this in mind, the company chose StoneFly’s ISC IP SAN and expansion units to implement a three-phase plan that:
- Fully virtualized and networked IT infrastructure
- Allotted for ease-of- manageability from StoneFusion OS’ ability to allocate and reallocate critical resources
- Created a scalable storage solution
- Accelerated performance exponentially by adding an expansion unit with SAS 6g RAID architecture
Learn more about how StoneFly’s line of high-performing IP SAN solutions helped MDA on this case study.

As everybody knows that when it comes to RAID, there are certain configuration myths that everybody seems to know:
1. RAID 10 is a requirement for databases. This is no longer the case. Today’s RAID controllers are much more dynamic that it once was as a combination of 400GHz and higher ASICS and IO processors as well as better algorithms have lessened the advantages of RAID 10.
2. RAID 1 configuration is perfect for holding the operating system. Actually this is false – small partition of the OS or applications from a RAID 5/6 is more than adequate. However, with the movement towards centralized storage, shared by high server counts, there is a justification to hold the operating system in the server and protect it with a mirror only because it is not practical to build multi-spindle performance effective RAID5/6 sets in 1U servers or blades.

Last week I came across this interesting whitepaper on CIO.com about the rapid growth of server virtualization practices within mid-market businesses. Just over the past few years, the jump to server virtualization among midsized enterprises have increased dramatically and is expected to grow up until 2012. Here are some key findings:
- 30% of midsized companies (worldwide) started server virtualization before 2009, but that number doubled by the end of 2009
- 75% of companies expect to implement server virtualization by 2012
- From 2009 to 2012, the use of server virtualization jumped nearly 46% (from 29.1% to 75.1%)
- Transition to server virtualization compelled to upgrade and deploy storage area network (SAN) appliances
- Within the next 2 years, implementing disaster recovery to virtualization efforts becomes a big priority

Today StoneFly releases the Clustered SCVM, a powerful virtual IP SAN software appliance designed for VMware environments. This fully redundant and fault tolerant IP SAN software can be created from two existing virtual servers, and is ideal for your virtualized and cloud environments.
With this latest release, the new clustering feature eliminates the risk of hardware failover by recognizing failures within a virtual storage server and instantaneously switching its resources to the other virtual active storage nodes.
To learn more about Clustered SCVM visit www.iSCSI.com or call us at (510) 265-1616. Also read more about this release on our latest press release.

We all know the importance of implementing a Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery plan, but what happens when you don’t have one? In our latest StoneFly case study, we provide a sound BC and DR plan while exceeding RTO (Recovery Time Objective) and RPO (Recovery Point Objective) for a Utah-based professional industrial packaging company.
By implementing StoneFly’s high-performance Voyager-TSC IP SAN with SCVM (for asynchronous replication), the company was able virtualize their IT environment by 95%, reduced server space by 80%, and now has the option to scale up their storage for the future.
To learn more about how our Voyager-TSC and SCVM achieved this on this case study.
